Colposcopy

A colposcope is an instrument with a magnifying glass through which a detailed examination of the cervix can be performed. Colposcopy examination is recommended if a PAP smear showed abnormal results suggestive of pre-cancer cells.

During colposcopy, a speculum is inserted into the vagina as done during a PAP smear. A mild vinegar-like solution (acetic acid) and iodine solution is applied to the cervix. The cervix is then examined under magnification. Sometimes, a small biopsy may be taken from the cervix for further evaluation. Depending on the results of the biopsy, the patient will be advised further treatment.

This relatively painless procedure is done in our clinic and takes about 15 minutes.

NB. The colposcopy examination cannot be performed while the patient is having her period.
